This is a translation of the Gary's reply to a similar question in the Russian part of the forum:
The CDD's ability to play video from a CD or from an attached HDD is just a way to "enhance" a music file with a video stream. That means that a movie can be displayed on the faceplate synchronously to playing the music. No external video outputs are supported. The CDD's display is able to show 128x32 pixels with each pixel having one of 16 possible grades of brightness. The video clips are stored on the disk in a popular container format (AVI). The format was chosen as the most compatible with various video editing and playback software available for PC, Mac and other platforms. Sound and video are the two main components of an AVI file. To prepare the clip file for playback on CDD, the sound part of the file may be encoded in any format supported by CDD (mp3 is recommended). The video part must be encoded using a format specially designed for CDD's faceplate display. Here is how to create a video clip for CDD: 1. Install the URALvideo codec for Windows. The codec is available here: http://www.cdd.ru/repository/firmware/uralvideo-1.1.zip 2. If needed, process the original video file to have the required size and palette, as described above. 3. Encode the selected video file using the URALvideo codec. You must select a 4-bit palette in URALvideo options. The widely available VirtualDub software may be used for video processing and encoding. You may view the resulting CDD video clip using any Windows video player, provided that the URALvideo codec is installed on the system where you're trying to play the clip back. Please note that CDD is a system for SOUND processing and playback. It's capabilities in playing video are limited by not only dimensions and resolution of the faceplate display and the computing power of the CPU, but also by the field of application. That's why CDD can not play back DivX or other widely spread video files. That's a task for other devices. |
